SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) –With just under a month before the start of baseball season, the Syracuse Mets opened its doors to fans for an open house this past Saturday. Families and individuals were allowed tours of the facility, batting cages, gift shops, and even got to speak to Mets legends. While die-hard fans have these opportunities, the Mets want to create a broader culture. The team is hosting numerous events during the season to grow a safe and welcoming community that doesn’t have to focus on baseball.
Mets general manager Jason Smorol says no matter if you are a fan or not, everyone is always welcome.
“These events are good to set the tone with our fans that we are open, we are friendly, we’re engaging, we want them to enjoy themselves,” Smorol said.
Specifically, the Mets want to hold a more diverse crowd and population. Opportunities such as nights that celebrate different cultures and ethnicities are some of the ideas Smorol is using.
“We have a lot of cultural nights. Polish night, Irish night, Itallian night and Haudenosaunee night,” he said. “A Jackie Robinson Day Celebration, a Juneteenth Celebration, and Pride Day.”
The main goal for Smorol is to give everyone an equally fun experience. No matter if you are a season ticket holder, a first time fan, or just there for the groups and events, his goal is for you to walk out of NBT Bank Stadium with a new memory and a smile.
