SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— Rappelling off a building in downtown Syracuse, you’re not sure whether you’re getting an adrenaline rush or facing a fear. But you know you’re saving others.

The McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center deputy director Erin Bates says she’s excited and ready for their biggest fundraising event. It’s called Over the Edge 4 Kids.

“This is our third and final year doing it. We’re hoping to go out with a bang,” Bates said.

Participants for Over the Edge 4 Kids have to rappel off a building and literally go over the edge. All proceeds will provide services for abused children in Onondaga County.

“We need things for us to operate: diapers, formula, crayons, books, blankets all kinds of hygiene items. The amount of things we give out, goes fast,” Bates said.

The McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center hopes the event will help others understand the stress, anxiety and fear children face when they share their stories of abuse.

According to National Child Abuse Hotline, every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children being abused or neglected.

Bates says anyone who is struggling with abuse will always have a home at the center. She believes once individuals rappel and step over the edge, they will face their fears like children of abuse and neglect.

“You’re cared about, there are people out there that want to help you when you are ready,” Bates said. “There are people that believe you.”

Over the Edge 4 Kids will be held Saturday, August 21st at One Park Place. For more information visit, mcmahonryan.org
